Stonewall Resort State Park: One of West Virginia’s Most Beautiful Lakeside Escapes

Tucked away in the rolling hills of central West Virginia, yet conveniently located just three miles off Interstate 79, Stonewall Resort State Park in Roanoke is one of the Mountain State’s most relaxing and unexpectedly luxurious escapes. Spread across nearly 1,900 scenic acres inside Stonewall Jackson Lake State Park, this lakeside destination combines rustic Appalachian charm with upscale resort amenities in a way that feels peaceful and refined.

What makes Stonewall especially unique is that it was the first state park resort in the country developed through a public-private partnership between the state and a private developer. The result is a property that beautifully blends the natural beauty and recreation of a West Virginia state park with the elevated comforts of a full-service resort.

The moment you arrive at Stonewall Resort, you’re greeted by the impressive Adirondack-style lodge overlooking Stonewall Jackson Lake. Massive open beams, natural stone, warm hardwoods, and oversized windows create a cozy atmosphere that instantly makes you want to settle in and stay awhile.

And while Stonewall certainly embraces the beauty of the outdoors, this is far from roughing it.

With nearly 200 guest rooms, multiple restaurants, an award-winning golf course, pools, hiking trails, spa services, and endless recreational activities, Stonewall Resort offers something for every kind of traveler.

Exploring the Lodge & Resort Amenities

One of my favorite things to do after checking in is simply wandering around the property. Stonewall has this welcoming lakeside vibe that encourages you to slow down and enjoy the scenery.

Throughout the resort, you’ll find fire pits, scenic patios, Adirondack chairs, and peaceful sitting areas overlooking the water. The famous “Almost Heaven” swing has become one of the resort’s most photographed spots and is definitely worth stopping by for a few pictures.

Inside the lodge, guests can enjoy:

  • Indoor and outdoor heated pools
  • Hot tubs and saunas
  • Fitness center
  • Full-service spa
  • Gift and sundry shop
  • Lakefront patios and gathering spaces

The layout of the property makes everything feel easy and convenient, whether you’re visiting for a couples getaway, girls trip, golf weekend, family vacation, or solo retreat.

Lunch at Lightburn’s Restaurant

For lunch, I headed to Lightburn’s Restaurant near the golf course, and it quickly became one of my favorite spots on the property.

The atmosphere strikes that perfect balance between casual and elevated, with beautiful views overlooking the award-winning Palmer Course. The menu features fresh soups, salads, wraps, and sandwiches that are ideal after a morning of exploring.

Even if you’re not a golfer, this area of the resort is worth visiting and incredibly photogenic.

The Award-Winning Palmer Course

The Arnold Palmer Signature Course at Stonewall Resort has received multiple awards over the years, and once you see it, you’ll understand why.

The course blends seamlessly into the rolling West Virginia landscape, creating some truly stunning scenery. Golfers love the challenging layout, but even non-golfers can appreciate the beautifully maintained greens and mountain views.

Be sure to stop inside the pro shop while you’re there, they have all the golf necessities plus exquisite signature merchandise.

Relaxing by the Pool

After lunch, I spent the afternoon doing one of my favorite vacation activities: relaxing poolside. Stonewall Resort features both indoor and outdoor pools, along with hot tubs and saunas that make it easy to fully unwind. One thing I especially appreciated was how peaceful the atmosphere felt. Even during busier times, the resort never seemed overcrowded or chaotic.

Between the lake views, mountain scenery, and quiet atmosphere, it’s the kind of place where you can truly disconnect for a while. It won’t take you long to realize you are in Almost Heaven, West Virginia.

Dinner at TJ Muskies Bar & Grill

For dinner, I headed to TJ Muskies, a laid-back lakeside restaurant located right on the property.

I ordered the Cuban sandwich paired with a slice of gourmet cheesecake, and both were excellent after a long day outdoors. Guests can dine inside or enjoy patio seating overlooking the lake, which becomes especially beautiful around sunset.

One of the best parts of staying at Stonewall Resort is how easy everything feels. Once you arrive, there’s really very little reason to leave the property.

Scenic Walks Around Stonewall Jackson Lake

Scenic Walks Around Stonewall Jackson Lake

One thing that stood out throughout my stay was how peaceful Stonewall Jackson Lake feels.

Walking paths wind throughout the property, making it easy to enjoy the scenery, spot wildlife, and take photos along the water’s edge. During my walks, I spotted deer grazing nearby while birds skimmed across the lake.

If you enjoy nature photography, quiet mornings, or simply sitting by the water with coffee in hand, this resort delivers that experience beautifully.

Breakfast at Stillwaters Restaurant

Breakfast at Stillwaters Restaurant is an absolute must while visiting Stonewall Resort.

One morning I ordered a gourmet grit bowl loaded with sausage and cheese, while the next morning I gave in to the rich French toast everyone talks about. Weekend breakfast buffets are also incredibly popular and offer plenty of options for guests wanting a hearty start to the day.

The lake views from the restaurant only make the experience even better.

Outdoor Activities at Stonewall Resort State Park

Beyond the lodge itself, Stonewall Resort State Park offers no shortage of outdoor recreation.

Popular Activities Include:

  • Kayaking
  • Paddleboarding
  • Fishing
  • Hiking
  • Biking
  • Pickleball
  • Tennis
  • Cornhole
  • Golf

  • RV camping

Guests can rent bikes and explore more than 20 miles of scenic trails throughout the property, while warmer months bring opportunities for kayaking and paddleboarding on Stonewall Jackson Lake.

Why Stonewall Resort State Park Is Worth Visiting

One of the things I love most about Stonewall Resort State Park is how well it balances rustic mountain charm with modern comfort.

It feels upscale without being pretentious, relaxing without feeling sleepy, and scenic without needing to try too hard. Mornings begin slowly with coffee overlooking the lake, afternoons are spent exploring the outdoors, and evenings end around a fire pit under the stars.

For travelers passing through West Virginia, planning a weekend getaway, or searching for one of the state’s best lakeside resorts, Stonewall Resort State Park deserves a spot on your list.
